By using the Powertop application in the Linux command line, I’ve found Tweetdeck to be extremely unfriendly to your laptop battery. I’ve highlighted the Pulseaudio ones as well, since they seem to be related. Totalling about 1200 wakeups.

Seriously, you’ve developed a great app, but by constantly stressing the cpu, Tweetdeck ends up draining the batteries rather quickly. Too quickly.

1. Can Economists Be Trusted? no blogue Economix do NY Times.

In last week’s post I argued that the analytic structure through which economists behold the world is based on certain quasi-religious beliefs on the rationality of human beings and the efficiency of markets. These beliefs can blind economists to the foibles of the real world.

Matters are worse when, wittingly or unwittingly, economists infuse their analysis with their own (or a political client’s) preferred ideology.

2. O Twitter, o alexgamela e a RTPN (no twitter). Aqui (no blogue do Alexandre Gamela) e aqui, no Expresso ou no blogue do Paulo Querido. Também lá fora se reconhece (e se vai começando a reconhecer cada vez mais) o poder do twitter. Uma das primeiras fotos e um dos primeiros testemunhos do acidente de ontem aconteceu no Twitter. Os mainstream media foram batidos e serão quase sempre batidos. O caso em questão é o do utilizador do Twitter jkrums, que postou esta foto (clicar para ver maior)

3. Já não foi a primeira vez que este “fenómeno” aconteceu no Twitter, como já acontecia através de outras ferramentas antigamente (lembro-me, particularmente, do IRC e do 11/9), os jornalistas (não os media) começam a reparar no Twitter, como regista o Leonel Vicente no Certamente Que Sim!

3. A minha mãe matava-se se soubesse disto, no a causa foi modificada (sobre o conflito de Gaza)

4. Quase nada é o que parece, no Sem Pénis Nem Inveja. Como a Teresa, muitos não saberão bem a história e não perceberão bem porque é que a Esmeralda foi entregue ao pai biológico. A Teresa ficou a saber e citou parte da história/explicação; e não é demais linkar.

5. Heróis, vilões e o ‘jornalismo de causas’ no Corta Fitas. Também sobre a Esmeralda, sumariza muito bem o que aconteceu.

7. Twitter: prós e contras (em 140 caracteres ou menos), por Paulo Querido. Um must, para quem não conhece e quer conhecer o Twitter.

Como twittei na altura, o Colin Powell anunciou o seu apoio ao Barack Obama.

No blasfémias, o CAA recorda o célebre episódio da ONU e os seus contornos peculiares.

Porquê?

I’m also troubled by, not what Sen. McCain says, but what members of the party say, and it is permitted to be said such things as:  “Well,  you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.”  Well, the correct answer is:   he is not a Muslim.  He’s a Christian.   He’s always been a Christian.

But the really right answer is:  What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?  The answer is:  No, that’s not America.  Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she can be President?

Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion:  he’s a Muslim, and he might be associated with terrorists.  This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

É banal o uso do TinyURL no Twitter (aliás, até é automático, sempre que introduz um URL mais comprido). Agora há também o TinyPaste, para texto.

O que faz ao certo?

Say you want to write a short book explaining in explicit detail everything you’ve done today. And you want to share it with all of your Twitter followers. Unfortunately Twitter has a 140 character limit. What do you do? You cheat by writing your diatribe into a TinyPaste text box and clicking submit. What you get is a short URL that you can paste into Twitter. Anyone who clicks will see the full text of your unreasonably long narrative.

Last weekend CNN lead with a big story about James Buck, a graduate student in journalism from the University of California-Berkeley who was arrested last month in Mahalla, Egypt while covering an anti-government protest. 

Thinking quickly, James was able to send a one-word Twitter update: “Arrested.”

His followers in Egypt and back in the US reacted by contacting the university and the consulate on his behalf.

Before long, James was updating Twitter with another one-word message, “Free.”

Após longa ausência daqui do blog, vou “tentar” voltar, na medida em que o tempo me deixar. A mudança de cara é o primeiro passo. A base do template já está mudada, mas ainda falta alterá-la. Para ir mudando ao longo da semana…

Todo list:

• Rever as tags, para tentar racionaliza-las e convertê-las em categorias, mais (ou menos?) do que tags;
• Twitter updates!;
• Aproveitar o youtube widget;
• Alterar imagens e mudar cores.
• efazer os links e voltar a colocar nas sidebars alguns dos temas que lá tinha (pelos vistos isto vai tudo ao ar, quando se muda um template);

E para já… não é nada mau. Logo se verá se esta lista irá aumentar.

UPDATE:

E aumentou, acabei por encontrar algumas boas fontes com funcionalidades interessantes, algumas já visíveis outras nem por isso. Como:

• Blockquotes;
• Sidenotes;
• Tag cloud;
• Expandir e comprimir os widgets de links (na verdade, html mas a funcionar como lista de links);
• Widebar” e sidebars (ver no fundo da página) e essas coisinhas que aparecem aqui por debaixo do post.

Adicionei ainda umas publicidadezecas, só para ver como funciona… se funciona. Mas também onde estão, não incomodam.
